Jesus’ most famous teaching is “The Sermon on The Mount.” Even people who don’t know where it is can quote parts such as: “Judge not that you be not judged” and “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” The “Lord’s Prayer” is also here. But widespread knowledge of parts is not the same as widespread understanding. Even among Christians, misunderstanding may be more common than understanding. Protestants, for example, preach “justification by grace, through faith” from Paul’s epistles. We are less confident how Jesus’ morality in the Sermon fits into that emphasis. If seen in the proper context, however, the Sermon on the Mount declares “good news” (gospel) from beginning to end. In this study, we’ll see the context in Matthew and go verse by verse through the entire Sermon.
