"No matter which approach or path we take, God's presence experienced in fleeting moments
creates a longing for God's continual presence that never ends . . .
And why does this longing seem so dormant today? In a word, distraction."

You are invited to be part of this unique opportunity to learn the ancient Christian practice of contemplative prayer in a Trappist Monastery in the mountains near Snowmass, Colorado. This formation experience is based on the monastic model of daily practice while immersed in a contemplative lifestyle with two hours of instruction each day. Silence is observed at night and during most of the day with talking at the evening meal and during instruction. Spread throughout the day there will be three hours of silent prayer and two optional worship services with the monastic community as well as opportunities for private conferences with the retreat staff or the monks as they are available. The instruction is given in video presentations by Thomas Keating, a Trappist monk who is considered the father of the centering prayer movement, an ecumenical movement in which Christians are rediscovering the early church fathers' and mothers' teaching on contemplative prayer and the spiritual life.
The food is vegetarian as Trappists choose a vegetarian diet to live simply and to be in solidarity with the poor. However it is quite good, and even the most ardent meat lovers can enjoy this retreat and not realize they have gone without meat for ten days!
There will be no opportunity for side trips into Aspen during the retreat; sightseeing or shopping trips should be planned before or after the retreat.
Two retreatants share a room with a private bath in the room. However there are three single rooms with a shared bath in the Gatehouse which is a good walk uphill to the retreat house. Please request at registration if you would like a private room.
The altitude is 7500 feet, and appropriate clothing for the cool mountain environment will be needed.
If you have any thought that this would be of interest to you, make a $100 deposit right away as the spaces fill up very quickly. You can receive $75 of that back if the reservation is canceled at least 30 days prior to the retreat.
The cost is $650 for a shared room and $700 for a private room; transportation is an additional cost.
Transportation should be arranged on your own. If you fly to Aspen, Colorado, the retreat staff will pick you up at the airport which is about a 30 minute drive. You can fly to the Denver airport and rent a car; Snowmass is about a five hour drive from the Denver airport. You may drive you own car as well.
Please contact Carol DiMarcello at coc@sopris.net or call 303-923-1789 to register.
Please contact Kathleen Muller at kamul@cox.net for more information or to let her know of your registration so we will know who from First Church will be attending. We will be joining other retreatants as well.
